Check engine light and car diagnostics

A code from a scanner tells you where to look, not what’s wrong. We test until we’ve found the actual fault, then show you what we found and what it’ll take to fix.

Signs it’s time to bring it in

  • A check engine or other warning light on the dash
  • The light is flashing (pull over safely and call us)
  • Rough idle, stalling or hesitation when you pull away
  • It cranks but won’t start, or it starts slowly
  • Fuel economy has dropped and you don’t know why
  • A smell, a noise or a vibration that wasn’t there last week

What we do

  • Fault code reading and live data testing
  • Electrical faults, batteries, starters and alternators
  • Ignition, fuel system and sensor faults
  • Emissions faults and pre-inspection checks
  • Intermittent problems, road tested with you if that helps

How pricing works

A written price before we pick up a wrench.

Diagnosis is a flat fee of [DIAGNOSTIC FEE], which covers testing until we know the cause. You get the result, photos and a written estimate for the repair before anything else happens. If you have the repair done here, [DIAGNOSTIC FEE POLICY].

Labor is [LABOR RATE] an hour, charged by the standard time for the job, not the time on the clock. Parts and labor are guaranteed for [WARRANTY MONTHS] months or [WARRANTY MILES] miles.

Diagnostics: common questions

Can I keep driving with the check engine light on?

If the light is steady and the car drives normally, it’s usually safe to drive to us soon. If it’s flashing, or the car is running badly, stop when it’s safe and call. A flashing light can mean a misfire that damages the catalytic converter.

The parts store read the code for free. Why pay for diagnosis?

The code narrows down the system, not the part. The same code can come from a $20 sensor, a vacuum leak or a wiring fault. Diagnosis means finding which one before you pay for parts.

How long does diagnosis take?

Most are done the same day. Intermittent faults can take longer, and we’ll call you before going past the time we quoted.
